🇩🇴Dominican Republic Address Format

Addresses in the Dominican Republic pair a sector (neighborhood) with a 5-digit INPOSDOM postal code that most people never use, so checkout forms tend to drop one or both. Here is the correct order, a real example, the postal code rules, and the mistakes that cause failed deliveries.

The Dominican Republic address format, field by field

A Dominican label runs recipient, the street and number with the sector, then the 5-digit postal code, then the city or municipality, then the country. The sector (barrio or ensanche) is the field couriers rely on most.

1Recipient nameJuan Pérez personal or business recipient
2CompanyImportadora Quisqueya SRL optional, above the street line
3Street addressCalle Primera No. 12, Alma Rosa I street and number, then the sector (barrio or ensanche)

Postal code rules

INPOSDOM, the national postal institute, assigns a 5-digit código postal, but Dominicans rarely include it because most delivery is done by courier using the sector and street. When present the code speeds sorting, but the sector name is what carriers actually navigate by.

11903

Format: 5 digits, no spaces or letters, for example 11903. The first digit denotes the postal region.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: a missing code, or a code borrowed from a different sector. Since the code is optional in daily use, forms often leave it blank or carry a stale value from autofill.

What makes the Dominican Republic different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

The sector

The sector does the routing

Dominican addresses hinge on the sector, a neighborhood such as Alma Rosa, Naco or Gazcue. Couriers navigate by sector and street rather than by postal code, so an address without a sector is hard to deliver even when the code is present.

Optional postcode

The postal code is often left blank

INPOSDOM codes cover the whole country, but locals seldom use them. A form that hard-requires a code pushes customers to invent one, so validate it when supplied but let the sector and city carry the address.

House numbers

Numbers use # or No.

House numbers follow the street with # or No., for example Calle Primera No. 12. Some streets are numbered or lettered (Calle 3, Calle A), so keep the exact designation to avoid landing on the wrong block.

Santo Domingo split

Santo Domingo is several municipalities

Greater Santo Domingo splits into the Distrito Nacional and the municipalities of Santo Domingo Este, Norte and Oeste. They carry different postal codes, so treating them as one city misroutes parcels between them.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to the Dominican Republic

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

Sector omitted. Without the barrio or ensanche, a Dominican street address is too vague for a courier to locate.
Postal code invented. Filling a required code field with a guess attaches a wrong region digit that can misroute automated sorting.
Municipality collapsed into Santo Domingo. Labeling a Santo Domingo Este address as plain Santo Domingo loses the municipality that sets the postal zone.
House number sign dropped. Removing the # or No. can merge the number into the street name and point to the wrong building.
Accents dropped inconsistently. Mixing Peña with Pena, or Gazcue with Gascue, across systems causes sector mismatches.

Dominican Republic address format FAQ

How do you write a Dominican Republic address?+
Recipient name, the street and number with the sector (barrio or ensanche), the 5-digit postal code, then the city or municipality, then DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. In the Dominican Republic the sector is the field couriers rely on most, so never drop it.
What is the postal code format for the Dominican Republic?+
Five digits with no letters or spaces, for example 11903, with the first digit marking the postal region. INPOSDOM assigns the codes, but they are often left blank because courier delivery keys off the sector and street.
Why do deliveries to the Dominican Republic fail?+
Most often because the sector was omitted, the municipality was collapsed into plain Santo Domingo, or a required postal code was invented. Keeping the sector and municipality, and validating the code when it is supplied, prevents most failures.
