🇪🇪Estonia Address Format

Estonian addresses put the five-digit postal code before the city and can carry a county (maakond) line that Western forms leave out. Get the code or the street format wrong and Omniva routes the parcel to the wrong sorting point. Here is the correct structure, a real example, and the mistakes that cause returns.

The Estonia address format, field by field

An Estonian label is recipient, optional company, the street name with the house number after it, then the five-digit postal code and city on one line, then the country. A county line is optional and used mainly for rural addresses.

Postal code rules

The postal code (sihtnumber) defines the delivery area and drives sorting for Omniva and the private carriers. It sits before the city, which trips up forms built for the US city, state ZIP order.

10148

Format: 5 digits, no spaces or letters. Written before the city on the same line: 10148 Tallinn.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: codes truncated to four digits, or a code placed after the city. Both misroute the parcel.

What makes Estonia different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

Number order

House number goes after the street

Estonian addresses write the street then the number: Pärnu mnt 10, not 10 Pärnu mnt. Abbreviations like mnt (maantee, road) and tn (tänav, street) are standard and should be kept.

Code before city

Postal code precedes the city

The five-digit sihtnumber sits before the city name on one line, as in 10148 Tallinn. A form that appends the code after the city reverses the order Omniva expects.

County is optional

The maakond is not always needed

City addresses in Tallinn or Tartu route on the postal code alone, so the county (maakond) line is usually omitted. It matters mainly for rural addresses where the same street name repeats across villages.

Special characters

Keep õ, ä, ö and ü

Estonian street and place names use õ, ä, ö and ü. Keep them intact or transliterate consistently, since a mix across the label can cause mismatches in carrier systems.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Estonia

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

Four-digit postal code. Estonia uses five digits; a truncated code like 1014 breaks automated sorting.
House number before the street. 10 Pärnu mnt instead of Pärnu mnt 10 is read as an unknown address.
Postal code after the city. Tallinn 10148 reverses the expected 10148 Tallinn order.
Missing apartment number. In a multi-unit building, dropping the flat number (Pärnu mnt 10-25) leaves the parcel at the entrance with no unit.
Accented characters dropped inconsistently. Mixing Pärnu and Parnu across systems can cause address mismatches.

Carrier notes for Estonia

How the major carriers handle Estonia addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Omniva

The national postal operator (formerly Eesti Post) and the backbone for domestic and inbound mail. Routing is postal-code-driven, so a valid five-digit sihtnumber is the most important field on the label.

Itella SmartPOST & DPD

Major parcel-locker and courier networks for Estonian ecommerce. They expect the street-then-number order and a clean postal code and city line for accurate locker assignment.

DHL, FedEx, UPS

International carriers for inbound shipments. Include the country line and keep accented characters consistent; they charge for address corrections on misrouted parcels.

Estonia address format FAQ

How do you write an Estonian address?+
Recipient name, optional company, the street name followed by the house number, then the five-digit postal code and city on one line, then ESTONIA. A county (maakond) line is optional and used mainly for rural addresses.
What is the Estonian postal code format?+
Five digits with no letters or spaces, for example 10148. It is written before the city on the same line and drives Omniva's sorting, so it should never be truncated to four digits.
Why do parcels to Estonia get returned?+
Usually because the postal code is short or misplaced, the house number and street were swapped, or an apartment number was dropped in a multi-unit building. Validating the postal code against the city before the label prints prevents most of these.
