๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐSri Lanka Address Format

Sri Lankan addresses route on the town and its five-digit postal code, with the province rarely written at all. Sri Lanka Post keys delivery to the town, so a wrong or missing town line is the usual reason a parcel stalls. Here is the correct order, a real example, and the mistakes that cause failed deliveries.

The Sri Lanka address format, field by field

A Sri Lankan label runs recipient, optional company, the house number and street, the town, then the five-digit postal code, then the country. The province and district are usually left off, because the town and code carry the routing.

Postal code rules

Sri Lanka Post assigns a five-digit postal code to each town and post office. The town name does most of the routing, and the code confirms it; the two should agree, so a code that does not match the town is a red flag rather than a help.

20000

Format: 5 digits with no spaces or letters, for example 20000 for Kandy. Written after the town, sometimes on the same line.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: a postal code that does not match the town, or a blank code on a town that shares its name with another. Validate the code against the town rather than trusting either alone.

What makes Sri Lanka different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

Town routes it

The town is the primary field

Sri Lanka Post routes on the town name, such as Kandy or Nugegoda, more than any other field. A wrong or missing town is the most common reason a parcel is delayed, even when the street is correct.

Five digits

The postal code is five digits

Sri Lankan postal codes are five digits, for example 20000 for Kandy or 10250 for Nugegoda. Older three-digit codes are obsolete, so a short code should be flagged and corrected.

Province optional

The province is usually omitted

The nine provinces and the district are rarely written on domestic mail, because the town and postal code already route it. Requiring a province field adds friction with no delivery benefit.

Repeated town names

Some town names repeat

Common town names appear in more than one district, so the postal code disambiguates them. Pairing the town with its correct five-digit code prevents a parcel from heading to the wrong region.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Sri Lanka

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•Wrong or missing town. Sri Lanka Post routes on the town, so an incorrect or blank town line is the leading cause of delay.
โœ•Postcode that does not match the town. A five-digit code from a different town overrides the correct town in automated sorting.
โœ•Three-digit code. Older or truncated codes (like 200) no longer resolve to a delivery office.
โœ•Town name variants mixed. Using Nugegoda and an alternate spelling across systems can cause lookup mismatches.
โœ•Street written without a house number. A street name with no No. 45 leaves the last-mile drop ambiguous.

Sri Lanka address format FAQ

How do you write a Sri Lankan address?+
Recipient name, optional company, the house number and street, the town, then the five-digit postal code, then SRI LANKA. The province and district are usually left off, because the town and postal code carry the routing.
What is the postal code format for Sri Lanka?+
Five digits with no spaces or letters, such as 20000 for Kandy, written after the town. Each code maps to a town and its post office, so it should agree with the town name on the label.
Why do deliveries to Sri Lanka fail?+
Most often because the town is wrong or missing, the postal code does not match the town, or a truncated three-digit code was used. Validating the town against its five-digit postal code before shipping resolves the majority of these.
