๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆSaudi Arabia Address Format

Saudi Arabia standardized on the National Address system: a building number, street, district, city, and five-digit postcode, with an optional short address of four letters and four digits. Using an old PO-Box-only address is the usual cause of courier failure. Here is the format and how to validate it.

The Saudi Arabia address format, field by field

A Saudi label is recipient, the building number and street, the district, then the city with the postcode, then the country. A short address can stand in for the full one.

Postal code rules

The Saudi National Address, run by SPL, combines a four-digit building number, street, district, city, and a five-digit postcode. The short address (RRRD2929) is a compact code that maps to the same location.

12211

Format: Five-digit postcode (12211) within the National Address; a short address is 4 letters plus 4 digits (RRRD2929).

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: an old PO-Box-only address with no building number or district, which couriers cannot deliver to.

What makes Saudi Arabia different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

National Address

Use the National Address, not just a PO Box

Saudi Arabia's National Address requires a building number, street, district, city, and postcode. An old PO-Box-only address has no physical location, so couriers cannot deliver to it.

Short address

The short address is a compact code

A short address is four letters then four digits (RRRD2929). It encodes the same National Address, so a valid short code can stand in for the full address.

Building number

The building number is four digits

The National Address leads with a four-digit building number before the street. It is central to locating the property and should not be dropped.

District required

The district locates the street

The district (hayy, for example Al Olaya) narrows the street within a large city. It is a required part of the National Address.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Saudi Arabia

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•PO-Box-only address. Without a building number and district, a courier has no physical location.
โœ•Missing building number. The four-digit building number is central to the National Address.
โœ•District omitted. Without the hayy, a street in a large city is ambiguous.
โœ•Malformed short address. A short code that is not four letters plus four digits fails lookup.
โœ•Postcode dropped. The five-digit code is part of the standardized National Address.
