๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟAlgeria Address Format

Algerian addresses follow the French model: the recipient, the street with its number, then a five-digit postal code before the city, and no separate province line. The first two digits of that code identify the wilaya, so getting them wrong sends a parcel to the wrong province. Here is the correct structure, a real example, and the mistakes that cause failed deliveries.

The Algeria address format, field by field

An Algerian label is recipient, optional company, the street with its number, then the five-digit postal code and city on one line, then the country. Addresses are written in French or Arabic, and there is no separate province field.

Postal code rules

Algeria's postal code is built from the wilaya: the first two digits are the province number (16 for Algiers), and the last three identify the commune. A provincial capital takes the wilaya code followed by three zeros, such as 16000, so the code and the city must agree.

16000

Format: 5 digits, no spaces or letters. Written before the city on the same line: 16000 Alger. The first two digits are the wilaya code.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: codes truncated to four digits or with the leading wilaya digits dropped. Both misroute the parcel to the wrong province or nowhere.

What makes Algeria different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

Wilaya code

The first two digits are the province

An Algerian postal code encodes the wilaya (province) in its first two digits: 16 is Algiers, 31 is Oran, 25 is Constantine. If those digits do not match the city, the parcel is routed to the wrong province before anyone reads the street.

Five digits

Postal codes are always five digits

Every Algerian code is exactly five digits, and provincial capitals use the wilaya number plus three zeros, such as 16000 for Algiers. A four-digit entry or a stripped leading digit breaks Algรฉrie Poste sorting.

French order

The house number comes first

Algerian addresses follow the French pattern: the number precedes the street name, as in 12 Rue Didouche Mourad. Streets appear in French or Arabic, and mixing the two scripts on one label can garble the address in a Latin-only carrier system.

No province field

There is no separate wilaya line

Because the postal code already carries the wilaya, addresses do not add a province line. Some senders write the wilaya name after the city for clarity, but the routing still depends on the five-digit code being correct.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Algeria

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•Four-digit or missing postal code. Algeria uses five digits; a shorter or absent code (1600) stalls automated sorting and forces manual handling.
โœ•Wilaya digits that contradict the city. A code starting 16 paired with Oran points to two different provinces and cannot be routed.
โœ•House number placed after the street. Rue Didouche Mourad 12 reverses the French number-first order and reads as an unknown address.
โœ•Commune and wilaya confused. Large wilayas contain many communes; using the wilaya name where the commune belongs leaves the local routing ambiguous.
โœ•Mixed French and Arabic script. Partial Arabic text on a Latin-only label can be dropped or garbled between carriers.

Carrier notes for Algeria

How the major carriers handle Algeria addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Algรฉrie Poste

The national postal operator, whose EMS Champion Post service handles most domestic and inbound international mail. Routing keys off the five-digit code, so validate the wilaya digits first.

Yalidine & ZR Express

The dominant private couriers for Algerian ecommerce, delivering across all 58 wilayas. They expect a correct commune and wilaya, and often route to a stop-desk by wilaya.

DHL, FedEx, UPS

International carriers for inbound shipments. Include the country line; they apply address correction surcharges when the postal code or commune forces a manual fix.

Validate every Algeria address at checkout

Address Guard checks Algeria addresses against carrier and postal databases before the order ships, normalizes the format, and flags the errors that cause failed deliveries. 240+ countries, $0.05 per check.

Algeria address format FAQ

How do you write an Algerian address?+
Recipient name, optional company, the house number followed by the street name, then the five-digit postal code and the city or commune on one line, then ALGERIA. Addresses use French or Arabic, and there is no separate province line because the postal code already carries the wilaya.
What is the postal code format for Algeria?+
Five digits with no letters or spaces, such as 16000 for Algiers. The first two digits are the wilaya (province) number and the last three identify the commune, so provincial capitals take the wilaya code plus three zeros.
Why do parcels to Algeria get returned?+
Usually because the postal code is short, missing, or its wilaya digits do not match the city, or because the house number was placed after the street. Validating the five-digit code against the city and commune before shipping prevents most of these.
