๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญGhana Address Format

Ghana has no traditional postcode. It uses the GhanaPostGPS digital address, a code like GA-183-4290 that pins a delivery point to a specific 5m by 5m square, alongside the region and city. Western checkout forms that demand a numeric ZIP either leave the field blank or invent one. Here is the correct structure, a real example, the digital address rules, and the mistakes that trigger failed deliveries.

The Ghana address format, field by field

A Ghanaian label runs recipient, optional company, the street address where one exists, the GhanaPostGPS digital address, the city, then the region, then the country. The digital address carries the precise location; the city and region give human context.

Postal code rules

The GhanaPostGPS code is the routing key that Ghana's addresses otherwise lack. The two-letter prefix and three-digit area code form the postcode (region, district, area), and the final four digits identify the exact grid square, so the full code resolves to a single location where street names may not exist.

GA-183-4290

Format: There is no conventional postal code. The GhanaPostGPS digital address is written AA-NNN-NNNN, for example GA-183-4290: a region and district prefix, a three-digit area code, and a four-digit unique address.

Validation regex: n/a

Watch for: a blank postal field, an invented five-digit ZIP, or a digital address missing its hyphens (GA1834290). The code only resolves in the AA-NNN-NNNN form.

What makes Ghana different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

No postcode

Ghana has no traditional postal code

There is no numeric ZIP to collect. A form that requires one forces customers to leave it blank or type a placeholder, which is worse than no field at all. Collect the GhanaPostGPS digital address instead.

Digital address

GhanaPostGPS is the routing key

The digital address GA-183-4290 resolves to a single 5m by 5m square. Where streets are unnamed or unnumbered, it is the only field that gives a courier an exact location, so treat it as the primary routing value.

Keep the hyphens

The code needs both hyphens

A GhanaPostGPS address is AA-NNN-NNNN. Running it together (GA1834290) or using the wrong separators stops it from resolving in the GhanaPostGPS lookup.

Region matters

Include the region

Ghana has 16 regions and reuses place names across them, so Greater Accra or Ashanti disambiguates the city. The region's letter is also the first character of the digital address, so the two should agree.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Ghana

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•Invented postal code. Typing a fake five-digit ZIP to satisfy a required field adds noise a Ghanaian courier cannot use.
โœ•Missing digital address. Without the GhanaPostGPS code, an unnamed or unnumbered street leaves the courier no precise location.
โœ•Hyphens dropped from the code. GA1834290 does not resolve; the code needs the AA-NNN-NNNN form.
โœ•Region omitted. Leaving off Greater Accra or Ashanti makes a shared city name ambiguous.
โœ•Digital address and region disagree. A code beginning A (Ashanti) under a Greater Accra region line signals a typo somewhere in the address.

Carrier notes for Ghana

How the major carriers handle Ghana addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Ghana Post

The national postal operator and creator of GhanaPostGPS. It runs domestic delivery and EMS, and its digital address is the de facto routing key, so validate the code and region first.

DHL

A leading international and in-country express carrier in Ghana. It expects the city, region and, increasingly, the GhanaPostGPS digital address, and charges for address corrections on misrouted parcels.

FedEx & UPS

International carriers for inbound shipments. Include the country line and the digital address; both surcharge address corrections when a location cannot be resolved.

Validate every Ghana address at checkout

Address Guard checks Ghana addresses against carrier and postal databases before the order ships, normalizes the format, and flags the errors that cause failed deliveries. 240+ countries, $0.05 per check.

Ghana address format FAQ

How do you write a Ghana address?+
Recipient name, optional company, the street address where one exists, the GhanaPostGPS digital address (like GA-183-4290), the city, then the region, then GHANA. Ghana has no traditional postcode, so the digital address does the routing.
What is the postal code format for Ghana?+
Ghana does not use a conventional postal code. Instead it uses the GhanaPostGPS digital address, written AA-NNN-NNNN, for example GA-183-4290: a region and district prefix, a three-digit area code, and a four-digit unique address that resolves to a 5m by 5m square.
Why do orders to Ghana get returned or delayed?+
Usually because a fake postal code was entered, the GhanaPostGPS digital address is missing or has lost its hyphens, or the region was left off. Since many streets are unnamed, validating the digital address against the city and region before shipping prevents most failures.
