Nepali addresses route on the district, municipality and ward number, not the postal code. Nepal Post issued five-digit codes but almost no one writes them, so the locality (tole) and ward carry the parcel. Here is the correct structure, a real example, and the mistakes that cause failed deliveries.

The Nepal address format, field by field

A Nepali label runs recipient, optional company, the tole and ward on the street line, the city or municipality, the district and province where the town is not well known, then the optional postal code and the country. The ward number and district do the routing work.

1Recipient nameSita Sharma personal or business recipient

3Tole + wardBaneshwor, Ward No. 10 the locality (tole) and municipal ward number, the key local routing detail

Postal code rules

Nepal introduced postal codes late and adoption stayed low. Nepal Post routes on the district and delivery post office, with the ward number and tole guiding the last mile, so a correct city, ward and district matter far more than the five-digit code. Include the code when you have it, but never rely on it alone.

44601

Format: 5 digits, no spaces or letters, for example 44601. Nepal Post assigns them by district and post office, but they are optional in practice and frequently omitted.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: forms that make the postal code mandatory. Many valid Nepali addresses ship without one, so a required-code field blocks legitimate orders.

What makes Nepal different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

Ward number

The ward number carries the address

A municipal ward number (Ward No. 10) plus the tole (locality) is how a courier finds a house, since most streets are unnamed or unsigned. Dropping the ward leaves the driver searching an entire municipality.

Optional postcode

The postal code is optional

Nepal Post assigns five-digit codes, but adoption is low and most senders omit them. Do not block checkout on a missing code; the district, city and ward are what deliver the parcel.

District matters

Name the district for common town names

Many place names repeat across Nepal's 77 districts. Adding the district (for example Kathmandu) and province disambiguates a town that exists in several places.

Romanization

Transliteration varies

Nepali (Devanagari) place names romanize inconsistently, such as Bhaktapur also written Bhadgaon, or Baneshwor versus Baneswor. Keep spelling consistent with what the customer entered so carrier lookups match.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Nepal

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•Missing ward number. Without the municipal ward (Ward No. 10), a courier has no local anchor and the parcel stalls at the municipality.
โœ•Postal code treated as required. Nepali addresses often have no code, so a mandatory field forces customers to invent one or abandon the order.
โœ•District left off a common town name. Towns repeat across districts, so omitting the district makes the destination ambiguous.
โœ•Tole and street run together. Merging the locality into one unstructured line hides the routing detail couriers actually read.
โœ•Inconsistent transliteration. Spelling a place two ways (Baneshwor versus Baneswor) across systems breaks carrier and address lookups.

Carrier notes for Nepal

How the major carriers handle Nepal addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Nepal Post

The government postal operator and the widest-reaching network, especially outside the Kathmandu Valley. It routes on the district and delivery post office, with the ward and tole guiding the final leg, so those fields matter more than the postal code.

Aramex & Nepal Can Move

The main courier options for domestic and inbound ecommerce parcels. They rely on a precise locality, ward and a working phone number, since drivers often call to confirm the exact house.

DHL, FedEx, UPS

International carriers for inbound shipments. Include the country line and a phone number; they charge address-correction fees when an incomplete locality forces a manual fix.

Validate every Nepal address at checkout

Address Guard checks Nepal addresses against carrier and postal databases before the order ships, normalizes the format, and flags the errors that cause failed deliveries. 240+ countries, $0.05 per check.

Nepal address format FAQ

How do you write a Nepali address?+
Recipient name, optional company, the tole (locality) and ward number, the city or municipality, the district and province if the town is not well known, the optional five-digit postal code, then NEPAL. The ward number and district do the routing, so never leave them off.
What is the postal code format for Nepal?+
Five digits with no letters or spaces, such as 44601, assigned by Nepal Post by district and post office. Adoption is low, so the code is optional and should never be a required checkout field on its own.
Why do deliveries to Nepal fail?+
Usually because the ward number or tole is missing, the district was left off a town that exists in several places, or a place name was transliterated two different ways. A phone number and a complete locality prevent most failures, since couriers often call to confirm the address.
