🇵🇦Panama Address Format

Panama has no national postal code for street addresses. Mail is routed by corregimiento (township), city and province, and much of it goes to an apartado (PO box) rather than a home. Here is the correct structure, a real example, and the mistakes that cause failed deliveries.

The Panama address format, field by field

A Panama label runs recipient, the street or avenue with the building and floor, the corregimiento, then the city and province, then the country. There is no postal code line for street delivery; PO box mail uses an apartado number instead.

2CompanyComercial Istmo S.A. optional, above the street line

Postal code rules

Panama never adopted a country-wide postal code for home addresses. Correos de Panamá routes by corregimiento, city and province, and many residents and businesses receive mail through an apartado (PO box). The apartado carries a zone-based number, but there is no code for street delivery.

Format: Panama has no standardized street postal code. PO box mail uses an apartado number with a zone, for example Apartado 0801-00123, which is the closest equivalent to a postcode.

Validation regex: n/a

Watch for: forms that make a postal or ZIP field required. With no street postcode, a mandatory field pushes customers to enter a placeholder like 0000 that means nothing to the carrier.

What makes Panama different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

No postcode

Panama has no street postal code

Unlike most countries, Panama has no national postal code for home addresses. A form that requires a ZIP produces junk data, so make the field optional or omit it and rely on the corregimiento and city.

Corregimiento

The corregimiento carries the routing

The corregimiento (township) is the key locality unit, for example Bella Vista or San Francisco in Panama City. It sits between the street and the city and does the work a postal code would do elsewhere.

Apartado boxes

Many addresses are PO boxes

Home delivery is limited, so a large share of mail goes to an apartado (PO box) written as a zone-based number like 0801-00123. An apartado is a valid destination, not an incomplete address.

Casillero imports

Cross-border parcels use a casillero

For orders from abroad, Panamanians often ship to a casillero (a Miami mailbox forwarded to Panama). The delivery address is then the courier's local hub plus a member code, not the customer's home.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Panama

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

Placeholder postal code. Entering 0000 or a US-style ZIP into a required field passes validation but tells the carrier nothing.
Corregimiento omitted. Dropping the township leaves the city too broad to route within, especially across Panama City's many corregimientos.
Apartado treated as invalid. Rejecting an apartado number because it lacks a street address blocks a legitimate PO box delivery.
City and province collapsed. The city, the district and the province all share the name Panamá; merging them loses the corregimiento that actually routes the parcel.
Building references dropped. Cutting Torre, Edificio or the corner reference removes the detail couriers use to find the door.

Carrier notes for Panama

How the major carriers handle Panama addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Correos y Telégrafos de Panamá (Cotel)

The national postal operator. It routes by corregimiento, city and province and delivers apartado (PO box) mail, since there is no street postcode to sort on.

Casillero couriers (Aeropost, Box Express)

Mailbox forwarders that bring US online orders into Panama through a member casillero. Delivery keys off the member code and the courier's local branch, not a home postcode.

DHL, FedEx, UPS

The main international carriers into Panama, including the Colón Free Zone. Include the country line; they charge address-correction fees when a corregimiento or building reference is missing.

Panama address format FAQ

How do you write a Panama address?+
Recipient name, the street or avenue with the building and floor, the corregimiento (township), then the city and province, then PANAMA. There is no postal code line for street delivery; PO box mail uses an apartado number instead.
Does Panama use a postal code?+
Not for street addresses. Panama has no standardized national postal code, so routing depends on the corregimiento, city and province. PO boxes use a zone-based apartado number like 0801-00123, which is the nearest equivalent.
Why do deliveries to Panama fail?+
Usually because a required ZIP field was filled with a placeholder, the corregimiento was omitted, or an apartado was rejected as invalid. Making the postal field optional and keeping the corregimiento and building references prevents most failures.
