๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆUkraine Address Format

Ukrainian addresses run from the recipient down to a five-digit postal index, and a large share of ecommerce is not shipped to a home at all: it goes to a numbered Nova Poshta branch. Towns outside Kyiv usually need an oblast (region) line, and street text leans on abbreviations like vul. (street) and kv. (apartment). Here is the correct structure, a real example, the index rules, and the errors that cause failed deliveries.

The Ukraine address format, field by field

A Ukrainian address runs from the recipient down to the index: name, street with building and apartment, city, oblast where needed, the five-digit index, then the country. For Nova Poshta, the street line is replaced by a branch number.

1Recipient nameOleksandr Shevchenko personal or business recipient
2CompanyTOV Kvitka optional, above the street line
3Street addressvul. Soborna, 15, kv. 8 street (vul.), building and apartment (kv.), or a Nova Poshta branch number
4CityVinnytsia the city or town of delivery
5Oblast (region)Vinnytska obl. region; omitted for Kyiv, which has special status
6Postal code21000 5-digit index on its own line, before the country
7CountryUKRAINE required for inbound international shipments

Postal code rules

Ukrposhta routes on the five-digit index. It identifies the region and delivery office, so a correct index sorts the parcel to the right oblast and post office before the street is read.

21000

Format: 5 digits, no spaces or letters, written on its own line: 21000. Known locally as the postal index.

Validation regex: ^\d{5}$

Watch for: six-digit codes borrowed from Russian or other neighboring formats. The Ukrainian index is always five digits.

What makes Ukraine different

The country-specific rules that generic autocomplete and single-line address fields tend to get wrong.

Nova Poshta branches

Many parcels ship to a branch, not a home

Nova Poshta delivery is commonly addressed to a numbered branch (viddilennia No. 5) or a parcel locker rather than a street address. A checkout that only accepts a street line blocks the most popular delivery method in Ukraine.

Five-digit index

The index is five digits

Ukrposhta's index is exactly five digits, for example 21000. A six-digit code, a habit carried over from a neighboring format, fails automated sorting.

Oblast line

Towns outside Kyiv need the region

Kyiv is a city with special status and skips the oblast, but most towns need it (for example Vinnytska obl.) because settlement names repeat across regions. The oblast disambiguates the destination.

Cyrillic vs Latin

Cyrillic domestically, Latin for customs

Domestic labels use Ukrainian Cyrillic, while international carriers need a romanized address and the country line. Transliteration standards vary (Kyiv versus Kiev), so keep one spelling across systems.

Errors that cause failed deliveries to Ukraine

Each of these passes a basic "is this field filled in" check but fails at the carrier, turning into a redelivery, a return, or an address correction fee.

โœ•Six-digit index. Ukraine uses five digits; a six-digit code (a neighboring-format habit) breaks Ukrposhta sorting.
โœ•No Nova Poshta branch number. Forcing a street address when the customer chose branch pickup misroutes or strands the parcel.
โœ•Missing oblast on a repeated town name. Settlement names recur across regions, so omitting the oblast leaves the destination ambiguous.
โœ•Inconsistent romanization. Mixing Kyiv and Kiev, or vul. and St., across systems causes mismatches.
โœ•Apartment number omitted. Without the kv. number, couriers cannot reach a specific flat in an apartment block.

Carrier notes for Ukraine

How the major carriers handle Ukraine addresses, and what your label needs to satisfy each one.

Ukrposhta

The national postal operator and universal-service provider. Routing keys off the five-digit index, so validate it first for home delivery.

Nova Poshta

The dominant private courier. Most orders ship to a numbered branch or parcel locker rather than a street address, so capture the branch number when that method is chosen.

Meest, DHL & UPS

International carriers for inbound and cross-border shipments. Service is restricted in some regions due to the ongoing war, so confirm coverage and include the romanized address plus the country line.

Validate every Ukraine address at checkout

Address Guard checks Ukraine addresses against carrier and postal databases before the order ships, normalizes the format, and flags the errors that cause failed deliveries. 240+ countries, $0.05 per check.

Ukraine address format FAQ

How do you write a Ukrainian address?+
Recipient name, the street with building and apartment (vul., kv.), the city, the oblast where needed, the five-digit index, then UKRAINE. For a Nova Poshta shipment, replace the street with the branch number, and note that Kyiv skips the oblast line.
What is the postal code format for Ukraine?+
Five digits with no spaces or letters, for example 21000, known as the index. It identifies the region and post office, so do not use a six-digit code borrowed from another country's format.
Why do deliveries to Ukraine fail?+
Common causes are a six-digit index, a missing branch number when the customer chose Nova Poshta pickup, a dropped oblast, or inconsistent romanization; service is also restricted in some areas because of the ongoing war. Validate the index against the city and oblast, and capture the branch number when it applies.
